Mark Twain Elementary

Houston, Texas
86,000 GSF / 750 students / 5.4 Acre Site

This replacement elementary school is located in an established central Houston residential neighborhood. A phased construction plan allowed the school to remain functional, on site, for the duration of the building program.

The school is a source of neighborhood pride that is the result of extensive teacher, student, parent and community collaboration.

The project features a compact floor plan with two-story academic wings that reduce the perceived size and scale of the school, resulting in a more intimate learning environment. Visual landmarks throughout the school contribute to an integral wayfinding system. Upper school grades are located on the second floor where the communicating stairs are symbolic contributors to movement thru the academic grade levels.

Mark Twain Elementary includes both formal and informal learning spaces where the distinction between work and play is blurred. There are strong visual and physical connections between interior and exterior – classrooms are naturally lit, views into and out of activity spaces and ready access to adjacent outdoor activity spaces.
